Mapping forward-looking mitigation studies at country level

Abstract We provide the first survey of rapidly expanding literature on country-level mitigation pathways using systematic mapping techniques. build a database 4691 relevant papers from Web Science and Scopus. analyze their abstracts metadata text mining natural language processing To discover common topics within abstracts, we use an innovative fully reproducible topic modeling approach based two machine learning models. find that number per country is well correlated with current levels greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, few for (current) low emitters, notably in Africa. Time horizons 2030 2050 each account one-third papers, former actually more frequent recent years, spurred by interest (Intended) Nationally Determined Contributions. Topic analysis data set reveals forward-looking encompass all dimensions mitigation, save financial issues, are lacking. However, energy to lesser degree land use, change forestry very dominant relative other sectors. Topics unevenly addressed across countries, reflecting national circumstances priorities, but also pointing gaps literature. The limited (currently) low-emitting countries raises questions about lack research capacity support construction domestic climate policies.
